ONATE, Ignatio De Lapresa (Spain)
 Dr. J. Ignacio Oñate (Chartered Ind. Eng., M.Sc., Ph.D., FIMF) born in Sestao - Vizcaya (SPAIN) in 1958. Chartered Engineer, he obtained his M.Sc. degree on Surface Technologies and Management Techniques at the University of Aston in Birmingham (UK) in 1984 and completed the Ph.D. degree by research on Surface Engineering at the same University in 1987, working on the effect of ion implantation on engineering coatings and tool steels. He joined INASMET in 1988 and established the Surface Engineering Group, becoming Head of Surface Technologies Department in 1991, with activities in corrosion and tribology, thermal spraying, thin film technologies and ion implantation. Since 1998 is the Director of Materials and Processing Dept. at INASMET, the larger department at INASMET with approximately 100 members of staff and a broad scope of materials activities (metal and organic matrix composites, forming, metal casting, plastics, ceramics, welding and surface engineering - tribology).
Dr. Oñate has managed and coordinated a large number of projects both at national and international level in Surface Engineering. In addition, he has contributed to the creation of two SME companies in the surface engineering field, holds 3 patents on coating and surface modification processes, has published about 100 scientific papers, co-edited or authored 3 surface engineering books and participated in more than 100 conferences or seminars related to ion implantation, tribology and thin film technologies. He was Chairman of SMMIB 1995.
