The International Conference on Surface Modification of Materials by Ion Beams – the SMMIB – is a conference series that began in Manchester, UK, in 1976. This biennial conference held in various locations around the world is the major international forum for the world ion beam material surface modification community to present and discuss results and applications in this rapidly emerging science and technology.
The purpose of the conference is to provide the researchers, engineers, and business managers associated with this field with a forum so that they can exchange their research information and share their results and experience.
Physicists, material scientists, and engineers from universities, research institutes, and industrial laboratories participate in this important biennial meeting to present their own research results, learn of up-to-date research results of their colleagues, and to discuss topical scientific problems. Recently the scope has been extended to other materials, including polymers and ceramics with the exception of semiconductors.
Meetings in the recent past have been held at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, in 1997; Beijing, China, in 1999; Marburg, Germany, in 2001; and San Antonio, Texas, USA, in 2003. In 2005 the SMMIB will be held in Turkey. The conference venue will be the Pine Bay Resort Hotel in Kusadasi, on the beautiful and historical Aegean coast, in early September 04-09, 2005. We expect a very high international attendance, and are committed to making the SMMIB’05 one of the most successful and memorable meetings of the series.
The scientific and technical content of the SMMIB 2005 Conference will emphasize novel technologies such as biomaterials and nanocomposites in addition to industrial applications and emerging research topics. Engineers and material scientists from industry are particularly encouraged to participate. In addition to the technical program, there will be an industrial exhibition with interesting new developments.
The meeting is particularly relevant to the application of ion beam surface modification to emerging technologies for novel industrial areas of utilization. Benefits of the meeting go two ways – from the world research community to industry via reports describing the most recent laboratory results, and from industry to the world research community in this field via the presentation of new available instrumentation.
