As we well know plasmas are well established for cleaning and functionalizing the surfaces of many commercial products including polymers and textiles for enabling grafting of additional monomers and/or enabling hydrophilic/hydrophobic behaviour. The plasma treatment area complements low energy ion beam treatments and can be the basis of hybrid: plasma plus ion beam. High speed vacuum and atmospheric plasma technology for treating films, fabrics, etc, will be given.

19) Jirohta KASAGI (Laboratory of Nuclear Science, Tohoku University – Japan)
Title: Low energy nuclear cross-sections in metals.
Performing low energy nuclear cross-section measurements by bombarding metal targets with deuterons at energies between 2 and 30 keV. the motivation for them was to obtain better cross-sections useful for modeling nucleo-synthesis of the elements in stars and supernovas. What they have found out is that there is enhancements of up to 100 of the nuclear cross sections at low energy. The electron screening is very effective. No one knows the mechanism of why the enhancements are so large. Moreover, the enhancement is very metal dependent, and there is no systematic understanding of why some metals give the effect and others do not. So it is a mystery. One of the best metals that give an enhancement is Pd! A review including the work of other groups will be given as well.
